Hands on activities are an extremely important part of learning in the classroom. These types of activities allow students to construct their own conclusions while visually learning and doing the task themselves. The activities provide the students with an opportunity to build on their own knowledge on the topic.
This particular activity is designed for a 7th grade mathematics class, where students will be given a wind up toy car, a measuring tape, and a stopwatch in order to figure out how fast a toy car is traveling for different distances. Students will be learning how to calculate miles per hour in their proportional relationships unit, where they will also be learning dimensional analysis in order to connect the different units and use the appropriate ones. Through the different examples, students will discover the relationship between miles and hours, learning which is dependent on the other.
